CVE-2026-100692
Alta · 7.5
CWE-59 26/09/2026
Hugo before v0.166.0 Path Traversal via Symlinked Mount Roots
Hugo is a static site generator. In versions after v0.123.0 and before v0.166.0, Hugo's symlink confinement checks stopped at the mount root itself, so a theme or module checked into themes/ (or a vendored module) could contain a symlink at a mount root (for example themes/mytheme/assets -> /some/dir/outside). Files behind such a symlink were readable during a site build through resources.Get, resources.Match and similar functions, and could be published to public/ via static mounts, bypassing the rule that theme and module mount sources must be local paths. Modules fetched via Go modules are not affected because Go module zips cannot contain symlinks, and this is not an escalation for the main project, which may already mount absolute paths by configuration. Fixed in v0.166.0, where symlinked mount roots and symlinked directories between the mount root and the module directory are treated as non-existent for all modules. As a workaround, inspect themes/ and vendored modules for symlinks at mount roots before building, or replace symlinks with explicit mounts.

CWE-59 26/09/2026
Hugo v0.161.0 to v0.165.0 Arbitrary File Read via Symlinks
Hugo versions from v0.161.0 through v0.165.0 run Node.js tools (css.PostCSS, css.TailwindCSS, js.Babel) under the Node.js permission model to restrict file system reads to the project directory and configured mounts. Because the Node.js permission model validates only the lexical path and follows symbolic links that point outside the allowed set, Hugo did not detect symlinks escaping the sandbox. An attacker who can contribute content to a Hugo project (for example via a pull request) can commit a symlink such as assets/css/x.css -> /etc/passwd together with a PostCSS plugin that reads it, allowing any file readable by the Hugo build process to be disclosed and potentially embedded in the published site. This affects builds using the default security configuration; projects that do not invoke Node.js tools are unaffected. Fixed in v0.166.0, which scans allowed paths and fails the build when a symbolic link resolves outside them.

gitoxide gix-fs before 0.23.0 Worktree Escape via Symlink
gitoxide gix-fs before 0.23.0 contains a path validation bypass vulnerability in the worktree checkout mechanism that allows attackers to escape the worktree directory via symlink manipulation. During forced checkout with overwrite_existing enabled, attackers can craft malicious repository trees where symlink entries replace validated directories, causing subsequent files to be written outside the worktree through the symlink for code execution or file manipulation.

Improper link resolution in the kitty drag and drop protocol allows a client to create files outside the staging directory
Improper Link Resolution Before File Access in the drag source staging path of the drag and drop protocol in kitty from 0.47.0 before 0.49.0 allows a program writing to the terminal to create files and directories at paths outside the staging directory, because subdir_data_for_drag() in kitty/dnd.c resolves a descendant of the staged item tree by constructing a path string and opening it with safe_open(path, O_DIRECTORY | O_RDONLY, 0) rather than by walking the tree one component at a time, so a client that declares two entries with the same name, the first a symlink whose target is an arbitrary absolute path and the second a directory, causes mkdirat() to fail with EEXIST, which the code ignores, and causes the subsequent path resolution to follow the symlink and return a directory descriptor outside the staging directory, which is then passed as the dirfd argument to add_payload() and used for every further create operation on that item and its descendants. Entry names are sanitised against path separators and dot components, but symlink targets are not validated. Files are created with O_CREAT | O_WRONLY | O_EXCL at mode 0644, so existing files cannot be overwritten, and directories are created with mkdirat() at mode 0755, so the attacker can create intermediate directories that did not previously exist. This results in the creation of files and directories at any path writable by the user running kitty, provided the symlink target is an existing directory.

copyparty SFTP Volume Restriction Bypass via mkdir/rmdir/chattr Handlers
copyparty contains a volume restriction bypass vulnerability in its SFTP front end that allows authenticated SFTP users to create, remove, and truncate arbitrary paths outside permitted volume boundaries by exploiting three handlers that bypass the xvol volflag enforcement. The _mkdir, _rmdir, and _chattr handlers construct destination paths using vfs.get(), vn.canonical(), and os.path.join() without invoking the chk_ap access check, enabling attackers to traverse symlinks leaving a volume's top directory and perform unauthorized file creation, deletion, or truncation via SSH_FXP_SETSTAT operations on paths outside any volume the account is authorized to access.

Apache BuildStream: tar source extraction escape
Improper link resolution before file access ('link following') vulnerability in the `tar` source plugin of Apache BuildStream running on Python < 3.12 allows malicious source tarballs to write files on the host, with the privileges of the user running BuildStream, via symlinks as part of source fetching.
The impact of this issue is mitigated by:
* BuildStream projects should only use trusted sources in their elements as otherwise the build output can also not be trusted
* Tracking a source tarball pins its SHA256 hash, which prevents MITM attacks of users that are fetching an already tracked project
* When running on Python >= 3.12, BuildStream >= 2.3.0 already makes use of the Python `tarfile` filter functionality, which blocks the symlink escape
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.8.1, which fixes this issue.

CWE-59 21/09/2026
Ansible FreeBSD Jail Connection Plugin: Jail escape via symlink following in put_file (host-side root mv)
Ansible FreeBSD Jail Connection Plugin is an Ansible connection plugin for FreeBSD Jails via jexec. Through version 1.3.0, the jailexec connection plugin's put_file resolved a transfer's destination to a path on the jail host ( + ) and ran mkdir -p and mv there as root on the host. Those commands follow symbolic links, and the path was operated on outside the jail, so a symlink existing inside the jail was followed by the host-side, root-privileged mv. A party controlling content inside a managed jail (the jail's root, or any process able to create a symlink in a directory an Ansible task later writes to) can therefore cause an arbitrary root-owned write on the host, outside the jail — a full jail escape. Arbitrary root-owned host writes are readily escalated to host compromise (e.g. cron, rc.d, authorized_keys). Preconditions for this vulnerability are that the operator runs a copy/template/fetch-style task (anything using put_file) against the jail, and the attacker can place a symlink inside the jail at or above the task's destination before the transfer runs. This issue has been fixed in version 2.0.0.

Arbitrary File Write via Directory Junction in WatchDog Anti-Virus Quarantine Restoration
Improper link resolution before file access in the quarantine restoration process of WatchDog Anti-Virus 1.8.640 on Windows allows local, low-privileged attackers to cause a quarantined file to be written to an arbitrary filesystem location by creating a directory junction at the original file path and persuading an administrator to restore the file. This may enable modification of protected files or SYSTEM-level code execution through DLL hijacking.

CWE-59 17/09/2026
mport directory asset installation is vulnerable to symlink and path traversal races
mport is the MidnightBSD Package Manager. Prior to 2.7.8, directory assets handled as ASSET_DIR or ASSET_DIR_OWNER_MODE in libmport/bundle_read_install_pkg.c used path-based mport_mkdirp(), ownership, and permission operations. A local attacker able to modify part of the target installation tree could use dot-dot traversal or substitute symlinks during privileged package installation, causing directory creation or attribute changes to affect attacker-selected paths outside the intended package directories. This issue is fixed in version 2.7.8.

CWE-59 17/09/2026
mport package installation has symlink TOCTOU in chown and chmod handling
mport is the MidnightBSD Package Manager. Prior to 2.7.8, do_actual_install() in libmport/bundle_read_install_pkg.c used path-based lstat(), chown(), stat(), and chmod() operations while installing package files. A local attacker with write access to a target directory could replace a checked file with a symlink before privileged ownership or mode changes were applied, redirecting those changes to an attacker-selected path and compromising filesystem integrity or permissions. This issue is fixed in version 2.7.8.

CWE-59 17/09/2026
pgAdmin 4: File Manager save_file writes through a symbolic link planted after the containment check
pgAdmin 4's File Manager save_file endpoint, which backs saving from the Query Tool and ERD, validated the requested path with Filemanager.check_access_permission() and then opened the file for writing with a plain open() call. CVE-2026-7819 had previously hardened the separate file upload path by opening its target with O_NOFOLLOW, so that the kernel refuses to follow a symbolic link at the final path component, but save_file was left on an unprotected open(). A symbolic link already present when the check ran was rejected by the check itself; the remaining exposure was a link substituted at the final path component in the interval between the check and the write, at which point the write followed the link and landed outside the user's storage directory, creating or overwriting an arbitrary file as the operating-system account running pgAdmin.
Exploitation requires the ability to create or replace a symbolic link inside the requesting user's storage directory. pgAdmin exposes no interface that creates symbolic links, so this requires filesystem access to the pgAdmin host or to a shared or network-mounted storage backend, together with winning the timing window. The reporter did not achieve a write against a released version, having attempted approximately 63,000 racing requests without success; the reported defect is the uncovered write path rather than a demonstrated sandbox escape.
The fix routes save_file's write through the same O_NOFOLLOW-protected helper already used by the upload path, so both File Manager write sinks carry identical kernel-enforced protection, and reports a symbolic-link refusal explicitly instead of surfacing the underlying system error text. Note that files created by save_file are now given mode 0600, inheriting the behaviour introduced for uploads. The protection covers the final path component; substitution of an intermediate directory component is not addressed by this change.
This issue affects pgAdmin 4: from the introduction of the containment check in the File Manager save path before 9.18.

Hugo before v0.165.0 Symlink Confinement Bypass via resources.Get
Hugo is a static site generator. In versions after v0.123.0 and before v0.165.0, symlinks in parent directories were not dropped during direct resource lookups, allowing path confinement to be bypassed. An attacker who can place — or who convinces a site author to place — a symlink inside a mounted directory (for example, in a locally vendored theme under themes/) can cause functions that perform direct lookups, such as resources.Get and os.ReadFile, to follow that symlink and read files outside the intended project boundaries, disclosing their contents in the built site. Themes mounted as Go modules fetched from GitHub have symlinks stripped on download and are not affected, and multi-directory walks (e.g. content/asset walking) are not affected. This issue is an incomplete-fix follow-up to GHSA-c3wq-j5vh-68rc and GHSA-fw87-fv5r-9fpw; it is fixed in v0.165.0.

Alta · 7.1
CWE-59 10/09/2026
rclone: Directory metadata (chmod/chown/chtimes) applied through a planted symlink in rclone local --links escapes the destination
rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. Prior to 1.75.1, when backend/local runs with --links, a source .rclonelink object can plant a symlink in the destination and later directory metadata is applied through that path. MkdirMetadata, writeMetadataToFile, and setTimes operate when Directory.translatedLink=false, so os.Chown, os.Chmod, os.Chtimes, and birth-time handling can bypass os.Root confinement and follow the symlink. An attacker controlling source contents can therefore apply selected ownership, permissions, modification times, or birth times to a file or directory outside the destination, with --metadata required for chmod and chown while modification time is applied by the normal directory workflow. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.

Bubblewrap: bubblewrap: symlink traversal via /oldroot allows writing files outside sandbox during setup
A flaw was found in bubblewrap.
