When unregistering a net device, since the needs_free_netdev has been set to true during registration, the netdevice object is also freed, and as a consequence, the corresponding vif object too, since it is attached to it as private netdevice data. The next occurrence of the loop then tries to access freed vif pointer to the list to move forward in the list. Fix this use-after-free thanks to two mechanisms: - navigate in the list with list_for_each_entry_safe, which allows to safely modify the list as we go through each element. For each element, remove it from the list with list_del_rcu - make sure to wait for RCU grace period end after each vif removal to make sure it is safe to free the corresponding vif too (through unregister_netdev) Since we are in a RCU "modifier" path (not a "reader" path), and because such path is expected not to be concurrent to any other modifier (we are using the vif_mutex lock), we do not need to use RCU list API, that's why we can benefit from list_for_each_entry_safe. Who exploits it and how urgent it is

A 0–100 score combining confirmed exploitation, ransomware and APT use, public exploits, EPSS and severity.

No exploitation signal in the sources consulted so far.
How the score was calculated
  • EPSS 0.2% (30-day exploitation probability)+2
  • Technical severity (high)+6

The score orders the patch queue; it does not replace your asset context (internet exposure, criticality, compensating controls).

Triage

Is it exploited, how likely is exploitation, what does it touch, and how severe do the sources call it.

First 24 hours

Ordered from the record’s own fields — exposure first, because you cannot patch what you have not found. A rule-generated starting point.

  1. Identify exposed assets running the affected vendor/product/version combinations (Debian Debian Linux, Linux Linux, Linux Linux Kernel).
  2. Apply the fixed version or the patch documented under Remediation.
  3. Search available logs for exploit probes matching the vulnerability class (memory corruption), errors and authentication anomalies.

What should defenders know first?

CVE-2024-26895 is "wifi: wilc1000: prevent use-after-free on vif when cleaning up all interfaces", rated High. It affects Debian Linux (Debian); versions are in the scope table. It is not in CISA KEV, which does not rule out exploitation. CVSS 7.8 describes technical severity. EPSS 0.24% estimates the probability of exploitation in 30 days; neither replaces your asset context. First verify whether exposed or business-critical assets run the affected versions, apply vendor fixes or mitigations, and preserve logs for review.
