CVE-2026-111757 — Hono: `serveStatic` decodes the request path a second time, leading to bypass of middleware on static paths

Hono is a Web application framework that provides support for any JavaScript runtime. From 4.12.4 until 4.13.11, serveStatic can interpret a malformed percent-encoded path differently from upstream routing middleware and bypass protection for a static prefix. The root cause is serveStatic decodes a routed request path a second time before filesystem lookup. The attack mechanism is malformed percent encoding survives the first routing interpretation and becomes a protected path only during the later static-file decode. The affected component is serveStatic. The trigger conditions are an application protects a static prefix with upstream middleware and serveStatic receives an attacker-controlled malformed percent-encoded path. The impact is unauthorized disclosure of a static file that upstream middleware was intended to protect. The issue does not permit traversal outside the configured static root. This issue is fixed in version 4.13.11.

Who exploits it and how urgent it is

A 0–100 score combining confirmed exploitation, ransomware and APT use, public exploits, EPSS and severity.

No exploitation signal in the sources consulted so far.

  • Technical severity (medium)+3

The score orders the patch queue; it does not replace your asset context (internet exposure, criticality, compensating controls).

Remediation

Fixes and mitigations documented by the sources — linked to the original advisory.

No fix documented by the sources we poll. That does not mean none exists: check the vendor advisory.

First 24 hours

Ordered from the record’s own fields — exposure first, because you cannot patch what you have not found. A rule-generated starting point.

  1. Identify exposed assets running the affected vendor/product/version combinations (Honojs Hono).
  2. The attack is network-based and needs no privileges: restrict exposure (ACLs, VPN, WAF) until patched.
  3. No fix documented in the sources: reduce exposure and monitor the vendor advisory.
  4. Search available logs for exploit probes, errors and authentication anomalies.

What should defenders know first?

CVE-2026-111757 is "Hono: `serveStatic` decodes the request path a second time, leading to bypass of middleware on static paths", rated Medium. It affects Hono (Honojs); versions are in the scope table. It is not in CISA KEV, which does not rule out exploitation. CVSS 5.3 describes technical severity. First verify whether exposed or business-critical assets run the affected versions, apply vendor fixes or mitigations, and preserve logs for review.
