CVE-2026-65970 — OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image…
OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.1.16.0, a crafted ZIP-compressed TIFF processed with TIFF multithreading enabled can make TIFFInput::read_native_scanlines() return through an error path while asynchronous strip-decompression work remains queued. Because task_set is declared before ok and compressed_scratch, those captured objects are destroyed before the task-set destructor waits, allowing worker tasks to use stale stack and heap storage, resulting in a use-after-scope crash and denial of service. The affected implementation is identified by src/tiff.imageio/tiffinput.cpp, TIFFInput::read_native_scanlines(), task_set, ok, compressed_scratch, and uncompress_one_strip(), which define the relevant source path, functions, state, and trigger. This issue is fixed in 3.1.16.0.
Who exploits it and how urgent it is
A 0–100 score combining confirmed exploitation, ransomware and APT use, public exploits, EPSS and severity.
How the score was calculated
- Technical severity (medium)+3
The score orders the patch queue; it does not replace your asset context (internet exposure, criticality, compensating controls).
Triage
Is it exploited, how likely is exploitation, what does it touch, and how severe do the sources call it.
Remediation
Fixes and mitigations documented by the sources — linked to the original advisory.
- Documented patch — github.com (NIST National Vulnerability Database)
- Documented patch — github.com (NIST National Vulnerability Database)
- Documented mitigation — github.com (NIST National Vulnerability Database)
First 24 hours
Ordered from the record’s own fields — exposure first, because you cannot patch what you have not found. A rule-generated starting point.
- Identify exposed assets running the affected vendor/product/version combinations (Openimageio Openimageio).
- The attack is network-based and needs no privileges: restrict exposure (ACLs, VPN, WAF) until patched.
- Apply the fixed version or the patch documented under Remediation.
- Exploitation requires user interaction: tighten email/web filtering and warn affected users.
- Search available logs for exploit probes, errors and authentication anomalies.

What should defenders know first?
CVE-2026-65970 is "OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image…", rated Medium. It affects Openimageio (Openimageio); versions are in the scope table. It is not in CISA KEV, which does not rule out exploitation. CVSS 5.3 describes technical severity. First verify whether exposed or business-critical assets run the affected versions, apply vendor fixes or mitigations, and preserve logs for review.
