CVE-2026-46220 — drm/amdgpu/sdma4: replace BUG_ON with WARN_ON in fence emission

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu/sdma4: replace BUG_ON with WARN_ON in fence emission sdma_v4_0_ring_emit_fence() contains two BUG_ON(addr & 0x3) assertions that verify fence writeback addresses are dword-aligned. These assertions can be reached from unprivileged userspace via crafted DRM_IOCTL_AMDGPU_CS submissions, causing a fatal kernel panic in a scheduler worker thread. Replace both BUG_ON() calls with WARN_ON() to log the condition without crashing the kernel. A misaligned fence address at this point indicates a driver bug, but crashing the kernel is never the correct response when the assertion is reachable from userspace. The CS IOCTL path is the correct place to filter invalid submissions; the ring emission callback is too late to do anything about it. Who exploits it and how urgent it is

A 0–100 score combining confirmed exploitation, ransomware and APT use, public exploits, EPSS and severity.

No exploitation signal in the sources consulted so far.
How the score was calculated
  • EPSS 0.2% (30-day exploitation probability)+1
  • Technical severity (medium)+3

The score orders the patch queue; it does not replace your asset context (internet exposure, criticality, compensating controls).

Triage

Is it exploited, how likely is exploitation, what does it touch, and how severe do the sources call it.

Ordered from the record’s own fields — exposure first, because you cannot patch what you have not found. A rule-generated starting point.

  1. Identify exposed assets running the affected vendor/product/version combinations (Linux Linux, Linux Linux Kernel).
  2. Apply the fixed version or the patch documented under Remediation.

What should defenders know first?

CVE-2026-46220 is "drm/amdgpu/sdma4: replace BUG_ON with WARN_ON in fence emission", rated Medium. It affects Linux (Linux); versions are in the scope table. It is not in CISA KEV, which does not rule out exploitation. CVSS 5.5 describes technical severity. EPSS 0.16% estimates the probability of exploitation in 30 days; neither replaces your asset context. First verify whether exposed or business-critical assets run the affected versions, apply vendor fixes or mitigations, and preserve logs for review.
